Why I Love PBS Reason #801 : Annie Oakley
Technology is not my friend. I know that sounds strange coming from a person who writes a blog about a television station that she watches online, but there you have it.
I think I am just too Irish. I was not meant for things to go well in my life, and when they do, something has to blow up in my face. This time, it was my computer.
Maybe that is one of the reasons I am attracted to the past. History, before we became so dependent on electronics, is such a fascinating time. Granted, I prefer it from my air conditioned home with my running water. And penicillin. Always be grateful for penicillin.
Before Holly left, we watched American Experience: Annie Oakley.
It was very interesting, how they talked about how Annie Oakley and Frank Butler treated her brand. How this idea of marketing, which we like to think of as a modern concept was well “established in the “Wild West”.
It really reiterates the concept of there is nothing new under the sun.
So Holly and I began talking about Annie Oakley, and some more modern concepts. Which is where she asked where Annie would stand on the gun control debate. I said that she would be like Gabby Giffords, a gun owner who is in support of common sense, responcible gun ownership and use.
Annie Oakley grew up when guns were necessary to survival. You used them to hunt, to put food on the table, to keep from starving. So, it was rare that people played with guns. And people’s guns were functional. You had a gun that you used for a purpose, not just to say you had it.
Annie Oakley was also a proponent of women learning to use guns and having them for self defence.
Usually, I hate to say “this person from the past who was in a different time and had completely different experiences would say this about a modern problem.” It is a little egotistical to think that I would know what someone else would say or do or think. But I like to think that she would be like Gabby: a woman of the West who was a proponent of personal responsibility and common sense.
And she would also kick butt on Top Shot.
